Traffic Density Detection and Signal Adjustment using IR Sensor

Aim: To build a dynamic traffic signal system where the timing of the signal will alter automatically upon sensing the volume of traffic at any intersection. Description : Traffic density detection using IR sensors involves mounting an Infrared (IR) transmitter and receiver on the sides of a road to detect when vehicles interrupt the IR beam. A microcontroller, such as an Arduino, counts the number of vehicles and uses this data to dynamically adjust traffic signal timing, extending green light duration for busy lanes and reducing it for empty ones, thereby optimizing traffic flow and minimizing congestion. An IR sensor system, consisting of a transmitter and a receiver, is placed at a specific distance across the road or lane. When a vehicle passes through, it blocks the IR beam, causing the receiver to detect the interruption. This detection triggers the IR sensor to send a signal to a microcontroller (like an Arduino or an AT89S52). The microcontroller counts the number of vehicles detected in each lane. Based on the vehicle count (density), the system dynamically adjusts the duration of the traffic light signals. High Density: If a lane has high traffic density, its green light will last longer to accommodate the increased number of vehicles. Low Density: If a lane is empty or has few vehicles, the green light will be shorter, preventing unnecessary delays and wasted energy.
